recent research & writing about bags
We are eagerly awaiting publication of The Environment Agency's study into carrier bags. This is the biggest 'Life Cycle Analysis' study ever undertaken and Greengrocer Bags form part of it. The report is due out in December 2008.

Earlier Research...
Last year, WRAP (Waste & Resources Action Programme) published a report called Consumer Research Attitudes to Carrier Bags. They discovered a number of things that we at Greengrocer would like to comment on and respond to.
Wrap's research revealed that respondent's felt that...
(i) Free Carrier bags are embedded in consumer behaviour.
GG: This may be true for now but changes are certainly afoot. We are all capable of changing our consumer behaviour...advertisers make sure of this with great effect. We beleive that common sense and regard for environment is embedded in many people in the UK and that the will to change is there.
(ii) The environment is a low priority.
GG: This is the one we have a real problem reconciling with the sentiments of the people we speak to. We simply don’t believe this…Even if this attitude is accurate...up and down the country, together we can change this perception and help build a better and more positive regard for the environment and our place within it.
(iii) Many consumers like durable ‘Strong’ Bags.
GG: Rightly so - this response we can understand! That’s why we made Greengrocer bags nice and strong & available in a range of styles...one for every task.
(iv) Only 13% of respondents interviewed regularly reuse ‘reusable bags’ such as a bag for life.
GG: OK UK! This isn’t nearly enough people using reusable bags. Why? Well we beleive that the demand for low-cost, high quality, functional and attractive alternatives to single-use carrier bags is really strong. It's just that there are not enough alternatives out there. This is the main reason we started making Greengrocer bags! So now that you can...Be Proud, Go Green, Go Greengrocer.
(v) A significant percentage forget to reuse bags.
GG: OK so we are not perfect and maybe a bit forgetful? Well, with our bags priced from only 99p, they are so inexpensive and so good that if you do forget yours, you will want to have more than one.
This page will be updated periodically with new bag research - stay tuned.
